Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital Expansion Awarded ENR 2022 Best Healthcare project for the Northern California Region

Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital recently marked the completion of a new three-story addition to the hospital building, featuring civil site improvements designed by Brelje & Race Consulting Engineers.

Engineering News-Record has recognized the Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital Expansion project as Best Healthcare project for the Northern California Region.

Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital needed to expand to accommodate growing demand almost as soon as it was completed in 2014. This $158 million project adds more than 58,000 square feet of space containing 40 patient beds, two operating rooms, and 20 intensive care beds.

Brelje & Race’s services for the project include design of civil site improvements, utility improvements, stormwater compliance, and construction administration. Our team also ushered the project through State and County permit review in coordination with the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) team led by HerreroBoldt, contractor, and Stantec, architect.

A key component of civil engineering for the project was verification that existing civil infrastructure could meet the demands of the expanded hospital. Brelje & Race studied the existing sewage lift station and emergency wastewater storage system to confirm that they offered sufficient capacity to accommodate additional sewer flows from the expanded facility. Brelje & Race also analyzed the existing onsite fire pump system and underground fire storage tanks to confirm they could meet building code requirements for fire water flow and volume for the expanded hospital.

Despite the challenges of completing design and construction during the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was completed ahead of schedule, and the new tower opened to patients in May of 2022.
